DIY Soft Box Offers Monster-Sized Lighting On the Cheap
Most DIY soft box projects yield a small 2×2 foot softbox and save you a few buck in the process. This monster-sized build yields a 6×7 softbox for a fraction of the cost of a commercial model.
You can buy stand-alone soft boxes at such a size but once you get into the 4×6 range you’re looking at a $500 price tag–far too steep for an amateur budget and still a chunk of change for a professional one. The DIY build, seen in the photo here, provides roughly 42 square feet of illumination, perfect for high-key photography and soft portrait illumination.
The entire thing is a cleverly constructed PVC frame, wrapped in white king-size sheets, and illuminated with two cheap slave strobes. The total cost was just over $100 and, if you already have some strobes laying around and some white sheets, you can easily keep the cost down around $30.
