DIY Glowing “Kryptonite Candy” Adds a Radioactive Vibe to Your Halloween Party
This definitely isn’t the kind of candy you’ll be handing out to trick-or-treaters but for a Halloween party it’s tough to beat glow-in-the-dark candy.
In the above video Becky Stern from Craft Magazine (the craft-centric sister publication to the Make Magazine) shows how you can make some delicious home made candy that glows under a black light. While normally we’re more interested in DIY projects that involve LEDs and soldering, the glowing-candy aspect really sold us. The magic ingredient is B6 vitamin powder (harvested from inexpensive Vitamin B capsules). When exposed to UV light it glows brightly and, encased in the crystalline structure of the candy, really puts on a good show.
It’s a simple recipe and there’s a good chance that you have everything on hand already (if you have a deep frying thermometer, for example, you can use that in place of the required candy thermometer). If you’re missing the high-temperature thermometer, you can pick one up for $6-7 at any kitchenwares store and most big box stores with a well stocked kitchen utensils section.
