What is the easiest way to instal a linux operating system?

Linux
Mit Akmod asked:

Where do I go to get Linux? Is it more beneficial to buy it? Can anyone give me step by step instructions on how to uninstall Windows 98 and install a linux os?

Thanks

  1. how much MEMORY RAM your computer has?

on this page there is a test, where the final will tell you, that distribution gnu / linuz suits your needs

but I recommend you Ubuntu GNU/Linux

Setup is very easy, you just insert the CD into the computer.

at the time that partition the hard disk, choose the second option, this format the hard drive completely.

this process completely delete the hard disk, and there you can install Ubuntu.

  2. I would recommend running linux over 98 any day! Since it is an older computer you might want to see its specs to determine the best version of linux. If your computer is around 700Mhz with 256Mb of ram and at least 4 GB of hard drive your best option will be ubuntu. If you have lower specs check out or dsl if your system is really old and slow.

Ubuntu is going to be far more up to date than 98. Its as the same level as XP/Vista. You can even try it out by downloading and burn a cd. Put the cd and put it in your cd drive and reboot and you can try it live before you install.

Some of the best reasons to switch is its going to be faster, more update, stable, secure, easy to use (different but easy), international. Its free to use, distribute, install not only the OS but all programs. Also available for free is a whole community with forums and chats if you have any problems no need to pay for support.

Linux is more If you want to support your favorite distro then do it. some do charge but its more your paying for support in advance. the support is guarnteed in that case.

You dont have to uninstall 98. if you have all you data backed up some where other than your hard drive just download and burn the .iso put it in your cd drive reboot. Boot from the cd and pick install.

Check out the installation guide before you install

    Good Luck!

  3. get this distro

Its based on ubuntu but has a light-weight desktop, and is more suitable to run on older machines.

Download the disk image and burn it to a cd.

Its beneficial to buy linux if (1) you can find a paid distro that will run on an old machine, and (2) you want the technical support

To install linux, just boot the machine with the cd in the drive and the bios of your machine set to boot from that drive (most machines have this already set up)

Make sure you back up all your documents first as this process will completely clear your hard disk.

If you find that this distro is too slow (ie your computer is too old), then Puppy would be a good next choice. Try xubuntu first though, as its a more powerful distro. (or if you state the hardware configuration of yr machine someone can advise you as to which is best in the first instance)

  4. For Kubuntu (Ubuntu with KDE instead of Gnome)
    go to:
Download the ISO and burn it to a CD,
Boot from the CD and tell the installer to use your entire Hard Drive (This will delete Windows)
Once the installer has completed, simply reboot and take out the CD and you will have Kubuntu installed on your computer.
For help with day-to-day usage of Kubuntu go to the #kubuntu channel on irc.freenode.net (Konversation is an IRC client and is pre-installed on Kubuntu)
Hope I helped, and enjoy Linux.
