What is the best version of Linux to use for a beginning user?

I want to replace WinXP home edition on a Compaq Presario.
I’m new to Linux and would like something that is fairly easy to use but I’m not afraid of a learning curve as long as there is documentation out there.

    I would go with Linux Mandrake. It has a windows-like interface and a nifty help/wizard feature.

    i would use Knoppix to start (bootable, without removing your XP, or having to DUAL BOOT), then try WinLinux for a bit, then when you feel confident enough, jump into an acctual fully installed OS. Suse is pretty good and user friendly as well.

    Be forewarned though, that your presario most likely has a Recovery Partition rather then restore disks, so if you do mess up the partitions, you may not be able to get XP back unless you get your full Recovery Disks from HP

    Here are a few good choices to get you going. “Xandros” linux would be a great choice, as well as “Linspire” and “SusE”, the learning curve is not as tough as others and they are stable OS’s…
