If you want to get rid of XP you have to back up your data on a external hardrive or you can partition it but you it might be hard to get your information from xp to Linux

this is a program that is called Wubi and it installs Ubuntu Linux as if it is an application so when you start up your computer you can choose between Ubuntu or Windows

(and none of your data will be lost)

When you install Linux it will need its own partition. You'll need to resize the NTFS partition (windows XP uses NTFS). Then you boot from the Linux CD, create a Linux partition, and install Linux and setup a dual boot. There are things that can do wrong so although you probably won't lose any data I wouldn't recommend doing it without a backup. You can buy an external hard drive for this.
