I have a Toshiba Satellite L35 notebook with:
- Ati graphics card

I am currently running vista basic, has anyone install linux on a system like mine. Any problems?

I have had very good success with OpenSuSE, as well as mandrake, SuSE (before Novell) and RedHat. All have been fairly stable on AMD, P4 desktop and laptops including recent Toshiba and HP systems. Your major issues will come from drivers for the mousepad, laptop ports and screen driver (speed). Another issue will be support for your modem (many laptops use soft/win-modem technology) while basic Ethernet will be more robustly supported. Basic ATI support should be there and ATI offers good speed enhanced graphics card support. A USB mouse should work fine, if the touch pad has difficulties. Your best connectivity will likely be Ethernet with more “pain” if you need modem.

you try liveCDs of the distros of interest. If a liveCD works, an install should work as well. I would recommend Ubuntu, simply because it usually works. you can always switch later if you so desire. It is good to start with something that will work out of the box though.

I happen to have the same laptop as yours.
And Congrats you can Install Ubuntu on your laptop as long as you have 10 gigabytes of space.
I know it is a lot but its worth it!
